Things a Good Roommate Does (Robin Rozier Shepard)

I was amazed how quickly I got responses to my recent survey.  Thanks to one and all!
Below is a composite list of all your collective and sage advice.
-Robin
Things a good roommate does:
  • Doesn't just clean up after themselves.   You have to clean up after yourself plus one, because over time there is a collective mess that not one person is responsible for, so no one feels like they have to clean it up.
  • If you're going to cook something that smells, give people a heads up, like "I’m about to cook salmon and onions and our house and your clothes are going to reak all night".
  • I don’t mind at all, I just like to be warned.
  • Doesn't hit the snooze button
  • Bathes regularly, stays clean and smell-free
  • Is a friend
  • Do your dishes right after you are finished with them, don't wait until you have a lot so that you can do them all at once.
  • Wipes off the counter even if there are just a few crumbs.
  • Give a friendly greeting every time you come home or leave.
  • Happy and cheerful.
  • Listens to you and gives sage advice when asked for.
  • Shares
  • Pays rent and utilities on time.
  • Is responsible and well employed.
  • Does fair share of cleaning and cooking and chores
  • Keeps noise level down
  • Takes reasonable showers and doesn’t use all the hot water
  • Acts as a wingman when meeting girls
  • Does not eat food they did not buy.
  • Does not “borrow” without permission.
  • Buys toilet paper.
  • Limits overnight guests.  Does not let friend/cousin/boyfriend move in and sleep on the couch without paying rent.
  • Respects others sleeping hours.
  • Around enough to be a good friend but not ALWAYS there.
  • Good listener, doesn’t dominate the conversation or always turn it to self.
  • Loyal
  • Keeps toiletries out of the way.
  • Wipes down bathroom and keeps it clean.
  • Doesn’t take over the kitchen or living room with friends or belongings.
  • Always think about how your behavior affects others, ex volume of TV, light or radio on while sleeping, talking loudly on cell etc.,
  • Don't waste energy
  • Considerate of parking situation, doesn’t  block your car.
  • Doesn't drink, smoke or use drugs
  • Has their own life and friends and often travels
  • Takes the trash out whenever you are headed that way.
  • Doesn’t do DRAMA

Most common answers by far had to do with doing your own dishes promptly and not letting possessions spill into or overtake common areas.

Colt & Sami Kennington (Peggy Rozier)

I suppose it is our turn to update the family on our recent life activities. This is Sami writing as Colt takes an online quiz. We had a lovely Christmas in Texas visiting my family, but we definitely missed visiting family in Fresno as well. We are now both back to school and getting started on our new semester. We really like living in Utah but we definitely aren’t a big fan of the snow. I am such a baby I had to get a huge red coat to survive this winter, as seen below.

Colt is taking Organic Chemistry, Physics, and International Economics this semester. If you told me I had to take those classes I would probably cry because science is definitely not my thing. Luckily I don’t have to worry about him because he is definitely smart enough for those classes. He is also working as a research assistant at the University Of Utah School Of Medicine. He works in the anesthesiology department studying pain mechanisms associated with Fibromyalgia. I felt like I was writing a scientific research paper with that last sentence, but that’s what he says he does. He loves it and comes home with good stories for me every day. He has about two years left of school before he plans to apply for med school. In other news he received snowboarding lift tickets for his birthday and he is really excited to go. He has chosen me as his honored guest and I am terrified…oh whoops I mean I can’t wait. Still building my courage for that one.

This semester I am taking Communications, Anatomy, LDS marriage and Family, and 4 major classes.  I like my classes so far, although anatomy is a little frightening. I work as a waitress in the Skyroom Buffet on the sixth floor of the Student Union on campus. I really like my job and my co-workers and am grateful I don’t have to drive to work in the snow every day. FUN FACT: Peggy also worked at the Skyroom when she was living in Provo. Fun little family connection there. As for school, I should finish in Winter 2014 if all goes as planned. Other than all of the above I like to find recipes on blogs or pinterest and have Colt test them out for me. He doesn’t seem to mind.

Together in our free time we like to go to three dollar movies and we drive to a Spanish Fork theater so Colt can get his large popcorn for three bucks. He loves popcorn so much…he says it runs in the family. We also like to play games and go on dates in Salt Lake City because sometimes that is just more exciting. We also teach the 12-13 year old Sunday School Class in our ward and we have a lot of fun doing that. It is our first official calling together and it is fun to prepare the lessons.

We have been married for ten months… it will be eleven this Friday. For our anniversary we plan to go to Denver, Colorado on a mini anniversary trip. We don’t really have a reason as to why we chose Denver except that we didn’t want to go to Vegas and we didn’t want to drive really far, so Denver was our best choice. It seems crazy to us that it has almost been a year but we are loving life together and can’t wait for all the years to come. So that’s our life update for you. Sorry it is a little boring, but that’s how it goes when you go to school all week I suppose. Thanks for taking the time to read it anyway.

Sincerely,

Colt and Sami Kennington
